Casks For A Cause
Casks for a Cause
Casks for a Cause is a project that I have taken on with the help of my wife, Veronica from Craft Beer Mingles. It’s all sort of obvious I guess; We love good beer and helping people when we have a chance. So why not do both?!
What’s A Cask?
A cask is much like a keg but it is intended to be hand tapped and consumed within a few days since oxygen can penetrate the cask once tapped and will not last very long (they don’t tend to stay full for long!). Cask ale is a beer that has been specially brewed and then fermented inside the cask and is never filtered. There are often unique things added to the cask to make even more special. Whether it be dry hops, wet hops, coffee beans, coffee, fruit, flowers or almost anything imaginable really. The brewers often experiment and have fun with the casks they craft. Traditional beer or real ale, as it is called in the UK, has been making a come back and beer lovers seek out cask nights all over for a special treat whenever they can.
What’s Our Cause?
Give A Mile is a Not-For-Profit founded by Kevin Crowe right here in Calgary. Kevin realized the need for people to spend much needed time together with their loved ones when illness threatens to take their life. With this need in mind he had the idea to crowdfund flights via micro-donations of travel points. The volunteers from Give A Mile will be on hand at our event with tablets to show our guests how easy it is to donate your unused travel miles to help people. Please visit their website and donate miles now if you can. They are currently in a huge campaign to raise miles before the holiday season. At the moment they have gifted over 60 flights of compassion so far and have their sights set on smashing through the 100 mark in the near future. As we all know, taxes are an ever present part of our lives and Give A Mile is no different. Every flight that is gifted through miles still needs taxes to be paid on top of those donated miles – this is where our fundraiser comes in!
How We Are Making It Happen
This is where we come in. We are holding a fundraiser ‘Casks for a Cause’ on November 5th, 2014 with the sole purpose of raising some much needed cash to help make more flights possible for people and families in need. I have been working with breweries and local businesses to make a great cask night out here in Calgary. Tickets for Casks For A Cause are now on sale at our venue, Pig & Duke Neighbourhood Pub or can be found online here. The price for this awesome event is $35 which will include 12 – 6 ounce cask samples for your entry fee and some food samples that are being supplied by the Pig & Duke. All money collected from ticket sales, raffles and auctions will go directly to Give A Mile. Please note that Pig & Duke has generously offered up the use of the pub for no cost to us. Every brewery listed below has generously hand made casks for this event at no charge to us and all prizes have also be gifted to us as well. The beer community has really rallied behind us and we couldn’t be happier! We will have the donated items to raffle off through the evening, a 50/50 draw and a couple of auction items as well. Up for auction will be a fantastic Chef’s Dinner at Pig & Duke and a brew day with the awesome guys from Tool Shed Brewing Company. So please bring some cash to get in on the action! I also have to thank ATB Agriculture for being such a great supporter and enabling us to by special glassware for the event which you get to take home. ATB Agriculture works with the hard working farmers in Alberta who make some of the best barley in the world, so they saw a great chance to connect with the consumers of the barley products that they help to make possible.
Without our sponsors we would not be able to make this event happen. I can’t thank our sponsors enough for stepping up and helping us out. Many of the breweries that are helping have never had any connection to me before this, they just wanted to help our community and Give A Mile. The craft beer community is a rather small one but they have huge hearts. I would like to thank the following breweries for their support and kindness:
Alley Kat Brewery
Banff Ave Brewing Co
Big Rock Brewery
Brewsters Brewing Company – Alberta
Fernie Brewing Company
Hog’s Head Brewing Company
Last Best Brewing & Distilling
Olds College Brewery
Ribstone Creek Brewery
The Dandy Brewing Company
Tool Shed Brewing Company
Wild Rose Brewery
Whistler Brewing Company
The following sponsors have helped out Casks For A Cause by supplying us with prizing to raffle and auction at our event. We thank the following generous sponsors:
Please keep all of our sponsors in mind in the future and help support them like they support our community.
A special thank you also goes out to Elizabeth Buchanan from Ambitious Housewives for helping to organize the volunteers for this event, it’s been a huge help!
What To Expect
With 200 guests, 13 casks and some food – you should expect to have a lot of fun. You will get a custom glass created for this event to help you remember the good times you had and our great cause. Plan on being there early, the first 100 people through the door will receive a great gift from one of our sponsors. The beer is expected to go fast and we cannot guarantee that you will be able to try any particular brewers creation. You will be getting tickets to enjoy 12 – 6oz samples of beer, that is equal to 4.5 16 oz pints. So please plan a ride home! We want all of our supporters to get home safely. Check out public transit in the area, call a taxi, get picked up by a friend or loved one, use a service such as Keys Please to get you and your vehicle home safely or walk if you are in the area. However you plan on getting home, please do not drink and drive!
I hope to see you out at our event, please stop and say hello to me if you are able to make it out. If you are not in the area or cannot make it due to other commitments please donate travel miles to Give a Mile and help them, help others!
