There’s A New Pig In Town
There’s A New Pig In Town! After three years of serving up great beer and a better class of pub food at the original Connaught location it was time for the Pig & Duke to expand. The new Pig & Duke Downtown Pub, situated at the corner of 4th & 4th SW in the heart of downtown Calgary, is set to have their grand opening party March 7, 2015. With the east coast band, Nova Scotiables taking stage at 8pm it’s sure to be lots fun. Owner Stephen Lowden tells me you should be on the lookout for select 20oz pints on for only $5 all day to help you celebrate the opening.
The new pub doesn’t actually look or feel new at all. In fact you may think it’s been around for years. That’s because they have sourced old wood beams to use as the bar top, and some tables. Old stamped tin panels adorn the walls along with old barn board and exposed brick and mortar. On some tables you will find that old bowling alley lanes have been reclaimed for table tops giving it a very unique feel. On a recent visit I had the pleasure of meeting a gentleman from England visiting Calgary for work and he couldn’t believe that the pub was actually brand new. It’s hard to really explain, but when you go to a pub you really don’t want it all shiny and new; you want a good feel, a good vibe and an overall good atmosphere. That’s exactly what you are going to find here. Like sports? There are a plenty of TV’s with pretty much every seat having a good view of the big screens too.
If you are at all familiar with the original Pig & Duke Neighbourhood Pub you will feel right at home at the new place. Chef Evan Robertson has brought his delicious creations to the downtown location along with a couple of new dishes for you to try as well. If you haven’t been out to either place, you are simply missing out! Look for some of the signature items like Pig Knuckles, Burgers & Swinetine. The chicken wings here are always a crowd favourite and on Wednesday nights you will find some of the best (and biggest) wings in the city featured right along with frog legs! New creations like the Diver Prawn & Chorizo Skillet is a great addition to the menu as well.
What are you going to wash all of the food down with? Beer of course! There are 24 taps on at the Pig & Duke Downtown Pub with the focus on Craft Beer. If you like to drink local, you’ll find that easy to do here with 8 local beers on tap from Big Rock Brewery, Wild Rose Brewery, Last Best Brewing & Distilling and Tool Shed Brewing. There are plenty of tall cans to choose from as well as some domestic bottles to help cater to everyone.
